The Soul Knows No Boundries

Kitten tumbled out of her bed at the Lodging House. This was not going to be a good day! Besides the fact she fell out of bed again, she was late getting up. If she didn't wake up earlier then the news boys she would have to wait all morning to get cleaned up and get dressed.

She sat up shaking her head. She looked up at the top bunk where her best friend, another female newsie, Buttermilk Toast was sleeping.
"B.T, ya gots ta be gettin' up now!", she yelled trying her best not to yawn.

B.T. looked down at Kitten with half open eyes,"I dun wanna....."
She sat up anyway knowing if she wanted to eat or make any money that day she needed a head start.
"Why does the day hafta start so early foia..?", she asked as she climbed down the side of the bunk bed.

Kitten stood up rubbing her eyes trying to get
Kid Blink, one of the head news boys, walked on it. he had a patch covering over his left eye. He had dark blonde hair, and the most mesmeric blue eyes that Kitten had ever seen.

Kitten despised him. He was always teasing her for being short. She was only 5'2". Her hair was honey blonde that was as soft as feathers, that she kept up the way a girl of her age should. She was pale and had milky white skin that was soft to the touch. She was told often she felt like silk. Kitten also had her own unique sent. She smelled like roses and baby powder. Her eyes were a sparkling hazel that seemed kind of a mystery. You would never know how Kitten felt if you looked into her eyes. She kept things hidden very well.

Kitten's clothes were always the same when she wore them. Over sized and baggy. She showed no hint of a womanly body that she hid under her skirts and shirts. She could not afford any other clothing so she made due with what she had. Her white cotton night gowns were even big enough to hold 3 people of her size. She didn't care, she always said,"Beggers can't be choosers!"

Blink walked passed Kitten purposly knocking into her causing her to fall down.
"Owww! That hurt!", Kitten grumbled as she got back on her feet.
"Opps, Sorry! I didn't see's yas dere, Kitty."
Kitten scowled,"Very Funny!"
"I thought so.", he laughed out.
Kitten grabbed her clothes and made her way to one of the bathroom stalls calling out over her shoulder,"My names not Kitty, eider!"
Blink then tripped her on her way out. She fell head first to the floor. The clothes flew out of hands and landed all around her.

Kitten had hit the floor harder then before. B.T. ran to her friends side to help her up.
"You'se okay, Kit?", she asked.
The side of Kitten's face was badly bleeding. Her hair was now tosseled, her nightgown was stained with her own blood.
Kitten lightly touched her forehead only to feel the sticky wetness of her blood.
A look of extreme panic came across Kitten's face.
"B.T.....", was all she got out before she passed out in her friends arms.

Kitten woke up in her bed. No one was around now. It was obvious to her that they had all gone to see their papes. She sat up gradually, wincing from the pain of her head wound.
She got out of the bed grabbing her clothes that someone had laid neatly next to her. She was surprised someone had brushed out her hair and fixed it up on top of her head. She walked to one of the bathrooms, closing the door gently.

She pulled off her night shirt and she let it fall to the floor. She slipped on her dusty grey skirt first. Tightening it to make sure it did not fall off her small frame.
She began to tighten her stays that became loose durring her many falls of the morning. She was about to put her shirt on when Kid Blink opened up the door.

His eyes widened as he looked her over.
Under all those clothes she was a girl. And what A girl!
The sight of her took his breath away. He had to remind himself to breath. He did notice for the most part she was clothed. He could see the tops of her not so exagerated chest. Her ivory white skin was beautiful. She was beautiful.

His train of thought was interupted as Kitten yelled,"Close da door!"
He slammed the door hard and she could hear him running very fast out of the Lodging House.
Kitten finished putting on her grey blouse. She quickly put on her already laced up boots with ease.
She could have sworn he was gone. He was not in the room when she woke up. Maybe he came back to check on her. She pushed that thought out of her mind. Someone like him would not be so kind as to do that.

She opened up the door peeking out to make sure no one was there. To her relief she was alone.
She walked to her bed and laid back on it. She could only imagine the humiliation she was going to face when the others found out about the lil scene that took place between her and Blink. He had seen her in a vulnerable state. She would never live it down.
She picked up her pillow to place over her face when she discovered a dime. It wasn't there before. She was sure of it! None the less it was hers now.

She got and ran out of the Lodging House. She decided to go meet B.T. at Tibby's for lunch. Maybe this day would turn out to be good afterall!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as Kitten entered Tibby's she spotted B.T. immedietly. She also noticed Blink joking around with Racetrack and Mush. Lucky for her he had his back to her.
Before she took a chance on Blink seeing her she walked as fast as she could over to B.T. who was sitting alone eating a hot dog.
"Hey Kit!", B.T. exclaimed."You'se feelin' betta?"
Kitten wished she had a rock she could hide under. Why couldn't B.T. be more quiet?
Buttermilk Toast stood up putting her arm around Kitten's shoulders.
"Hey, everybody, Kitten's feelin' betta!"
Jack came over to Kitten and gave her a big bear hug. Everyone kept saying,"Hey Kitten!", and "How ya feelin' Kitten?"
Except Blink. He ignored her putting his back to her the way he always did.
"That must be so easy for him!", she thought.
She did not know the half of it. He didn't want to like her. There was always a small part of him that did. Ever since he found her ditched by her parents in front of the Ldging house 3 years ago he had wanted to just hold her close to him. He wanted to take away all her pain. She was to set in her ways to let anyone get close to her.
B.T. was the only exception. She was 11 when Kitten came to the Lodging House. Kitten made it her duty to be there for the Kid. They were 3 1/2 years apart. B.T. always looked up to Kitten. They were as close as sisters and never spent more then a minute away from each other. He put her out of his mind again. He had not let himself care for her before and he was not about to. All she was, was just another girl.
Kitten smiled to all of them saying,"I'm fine."
She had also told B.T. to meet them at their spot at Central Park. She then took her leave.
On her way out she glanced at Blink. Was it her or had he been watching her from the corner of his eyes?
She decided she was imagining it. She tucked the dime deep into her skirt pocket and she made her way to the park. Boy, did she ever have a story to tell B.T.!
