As you already know I have way too much time on my hands, so one day I wrote down the first thing I thought of while I was watching the movie. Here are my random thoughts I had as I was watching the movie. Don't take me too seriously or get angry with me. It is all in fun. Enjoy!
Opening scene (before "Carrying the Banner" and after the prologue):
*The kid sleeping on the statue has dirty feet
*In fact, all the newsies have dirty feet
*When Jack wakes up his hair looks either wet or greasy (and he looks totally un-hot but we won't go into that)
"Carrying the Banner"
*Why do the newsies put their suspenders over their undershirts and not wait 'til they are wearining their real shirts? Or would their pants fall down?
*Don't ya love Blink's face after he pushes Specs away? (After Specs says, "since when did you become me mudda?")
*Mush has a nice chest
*Why is it so funny that Jack slept on his back?
*When Mush is punching Jack, it sorta looks like he really does hurt Jack.
*Race looks really funny when he needs a towel.
*Watch Pie Eater when the newsies are leaving the Lodging House. He's whooping and jumping around like a fool. It's quite amusing.
*The kid with the red hair and freckles that say "Deses' for the newsies" is quite unattractive.
*Why is the street sweeper (who's in the background just before Crutchy sings, "I'm no snooza'...") wearin' white? Wouldn't he get all dusty? What is the purpose of sweeping the street anyway?
*Blink is REALLY GOOD at that lovely pelvic thrust thing
*Jack gives the nuns this really cynical look.
*Wow. There really is lint on that nun's wimple.
*Mush looks like he's about to cry when he sings "I gotta find an angle."
*Crutchy's voice is super nasal when he sings "I gotta sell more papes."
*Jumping off that wall looks fairly cool, I must say.
*Jack dances REALLY messed up when they sing "cause at two for a penny..."
*What is up with Les and they dang sword?
*Jack's response to Dave's question ("What do you think you're doing?" "Runnin'!") is pretty dumb,
*When Jack's fighting the Delanceys, all of the newsies are moving, but not singing yet the music plays on...
*The pulley doohicky Jack uses to get himself off the gate with is incredibly cool.
Buying Papes
*The sound is off when Jack whispers "Mr. Weasel..."
*Right after Race buys his papes, there is this singsongy voice (it kinda sounds like Blink) that says, "Jack is jus' dat way." Some people prefer to assert that it's "Jacky boy got laid" or "Jacky just got laid." I rewound the movie and watched that part about 15 times. It's "Jack is jus' dat way."
*After Jack buys Dave fifty papes with Race's money, he walks down these steps and well, his pants...they don't, um, fit so good right then...
*When Jack is cutting a deal with Davy, why does he keep turning to look at Mush?
*Pulitzer's magnifying glass is waaay off when he's reading the headline: "Trolley Strike Drags on for Third Week."
*When Pulitzer is talking about creating "The World" there is spit glistening on the end of his cigar.
*Those boxing pants are soooo wrong.
*That boxing ref. has huge bags under his eyes.
*When Jack says "It's not lyin'; it's just improvin' da truth a little" he says the word "little" really funny.
*Dave looks absolutely hilarious when he's sniffing Les.
*You can't understand anything Snyder is yelling unless you know what it is beforehand.
Irving Hall and the Jacobs'
*In the real world, no one would want to buy that paper after Les had coughed on it.
*Medda and Jack are 'makin eyes' with each other
*Medda's bangs are really poofy and funky.
*Dave sounds really sarcastic after they leave Irving Hall and he says, "Oh, I loved that."
*I find it kind of surprising that a Disney movie portrays kids smoking. *grumbles* It's all a conspiracy. Disney is probably in bed with the tobbacco companies....
*What is Jack chewing on during the trolley strike?
*Esther Jacob's accent gets really annoying.
*The Jacobs' are the "perfect family."
*The Jacobs' have really weird drinking glasses
*It's very amusing when Davey cries, "I'll get the knife!" I swear the kid enjoys polishing it and watching the light glint off it.
*Sarah sounds so darn excited when she says "I'll get the plates!" They're plates. Get over it.
*As Sarah hands Jack the piece of cake, Jack looks at the cake and makes this face, as if he can't believe he got such a small piece. Then he looks rather annoyed when she doesn't give him the fork right away.
Santa Fe
*Jack hesitates before running and jumping on that hay cart.
*When Jack is doing his little dance, there is this guy following Jack on the second story window of one of the buildings.
*Jack's little Santa Fe dance looks pretty stupid but he pulls if off with as much dignity as possible.
*Jack just doesn't have that "Cowboy" look.
*When Jack is getting off that horse, he has a wedgie.
*The kid also has major hat hair at the end of Santa Fe.
The Jack-up
*Seitz really isn't such a bad guy.
*Pulitzer looks like a total moron when he's making those demented cash register noises.
*Skit looks like he stepped out of the 1940's when he says "Dis'll bust me..." Don't ask me why...
*When Les says, "Let 'im think..." Jack turns and looks at him like he's a total freak.
*Dave's reaction to cover up Les' mouth whenhe shouts "Strike!" is delayed, not to mention violent. Les looks like he's being strangled by Dave
The Strike
*Why does Dave look in charge to Denton? I mean, he kind of is but if you were watching from a distance, Jack would still look in charge. I think Denton just wanted to introduce himself to Dave. Hmm.....
*Jack says "hoity-toity" funky yet it's kinda catchy...
Brooklyn
*I once asked myself, "Is it really that fun to scream off a bridge?" Well, yeah, actually, it is. ;)
*What does "I spent a month there one night" mean anyway?
*That newsie that climbs up the dock...his pants are just wrong. (Not that it stops me from watching intently every time...)
*Spot says "boyds", not "boidees." I've had a long running dispute with this....
*Jack actually looks good in his hat when he says, "'Cause I'm tellin' ya Spot." He had really nice hair during that scene as well but he covered it with that darn hat!
*Spot looks so cute when he says,"Jack be nimble, Jack be quick...
Ripping up the papers and Seize the Day
*Denton has a really funky bowtie after "Seize the Day."
*Making faces at the Delancey's looks fun.
*Ripping up those papers and tossin' em around looks fun too.
*Crutchy looks totally high when he's ripping up those papers even though everyone else is leaving.
*Don't ya just love the way Jack says, "It's jus' da way things woik, ya know?" *sigh* Sorry.
*Dave and Jack look absolutly terrible during the Seize the Day Chorale.
*It must have been hard to dance without your hat falling off. Maybe they had those hats glued on....
*Fighting people off with slingshots is sooo implausible. But fun to watch
*Dave looks pretty demented holding his foot in the picture.
*So does Les. He appears to be being strangled by Jack.
King of New York
*What is in the glass Spot is holding?
*Everytime I hear Blink sing,"A Saturday Night wit da mayors daughters" I wish I was the mayors daughter
*Mush looks really cute when he is singing
*Hmm...Racetrack is cute when he is singing through this song...Of course I am probably the only girl on earth to think that
*The newsies take up all the seats at Tibby's.
*Where do they get that red cloth they throw at Denton?
*The fact that Denton can't sing is actually semi-tolerable at certain points in King of New York if you watch it enough, although the sight of Denton still makes me cringe.
*Why does Denton keep holding onto that stupid chicken drumstick?
*Why do most of the newsies take the suspenders down and just let 'em hand around their legs? It is uncomfortable to have your pants pulled up all the time? Ok, well, for a guy it might be. Sheesh, I wouldn't know.
*Several of the newsies (Jake and Itey I think, though I could be wrong) dance around with napkins tucked into their shirts.
*When they're toasting Denton, watch Blink and Mush. Blink doesn't get a glass so he shares with Mush and Blink thinks it's really funny.(He still looks cute!)
Beatin' it and breakfast with Sarah
*When Snyder is looking for Jack at the Lodging House, Swifty stops and shushes Jack when he comes it. Look at Swifty's hand. There is this little white square of paint on it.
*Racetrack's cigar is not even lit
*Who (aside from Sarah) checks outside their window every morning?
*And also who wakes up with perfect hair? Sheesh, even Jack has messy hair in this scene.
*Why bother covering yourself up with a see-thru curtain?
*The was Sarah lets go of that curtain annoys me...
*Why in the world is Jack boxing socks on the roof?
*Looky! Jack steals a tomato! He sort of walks up to the bush and shoves the thing in his pocket when Sarah isn't looking.
*What's up with Sarah's costume? The black socks???And it was IMPROPER for females to wear there hair down in those times. Only girls who wore there hair down for people to see were whores......Yup, that proves it..Sarah is a whore
*The sky always looks so painted on. Which is is.
*What does Jack lick off his hand right before he says, "I'm not sayin' it should matta'...." Wait...why is Jack licking his hand anyway?
*That piece of bread Sarah has looks like it's square. It does!
*What is Jack chewing on?
The Rally
*What kind of line is "dare to greeeeeeee?" It's when Pulitzer is talking about how the police should arrest Jack at the rally and how he wants an example made out of him so that none of the others will "dare to greeeeee."
*Watch Jack's hands when he waves at the newsies to be quiet during the rally. They look weird! Sorta like Gumby or something....ewww, Gumby....*shudders*
*Dave is almost as tall as Jack. He's just 2 inches shorter. And they film it so the camera always seems to be looking down at Spot, making him seem short. But he's really not; he's only 2 inches shorter than Dave at 5'8".
*How come the newsies can't understand when Dave talks but then can understand when Jack does? Is Dave-ese that hard?
*Blink's voice cracks strangely when he says, "Tell 'em Jack!"(It hurts ta say it...it truly, truly does)
*Don't ya love the way that vein in Jack's head gets all big when he gets excited during his rally speech?
*Jack's hand is really tan. Look at it when he and Spot spit-shake.
*Everything Medda is wearing at the rally is pink, even her tights.
*I'm not even gonna ask why "Hello newsies, what's new?" is so funny.
*If you watch it enough, High Times, Hard Times becomes kinda catchy. It'd make a good drinking song.
*Sarah looks like Little Bo Peep at the rally. Except she doesn't have a staff and a herd of sheep. But then, Bo looses her sheep...
*Gee, I bet Sarah sure feels cool when Jack ditches her to go dance with Medda who could like be his mother.
*The ropes on Medda's swing look like those fake, plastic Hawaiian leis you buy at the party store.
*Why does Medda scream at the end of High Times, Hard Times?
*Wasn't Ann-Margret kind of heavy to lift? Ahh, well, stunt people, I guess...
*Why does Dave always have to slap Jack and scream in his face to get Jack's attention?
*You can't understand anything that Medda is screaming, but if you use caption on your tv she is saying,"No! No! For God's Sake. He's just a child! Why can't you pick on someone your own size?!?! RACETRACK!!"
*Dave says, "Push me" to Jack. I don't know why but it sounds really funny.
*It looks like it really must have hurt when the policeman hit Blink.(My poor baby!)
*Don't you just love that groan Jack makes when he gets punched and everything is in slo-mo?
*Watch Jack's legs when they carry him out of the rally on his back. There's one guy who's got his hand on Jack's thigh and it looks like he's trying to find a better place to place he hand but he can't find out. There's another guy who is trying to put his hand on Jack's pant's waist and it looks like they're gonna rip his pants off.
*Denton has a funky bowtie in court.
*Movealong Monaham (the judge) has really weird eyes.
*Race's hair looks cool at Tibby's.
Jack turns scab
*Ya gotta love the way Jack says, "I don't just sell yer papes Joe. Sometimes I read 'em."
*The way Pulitzer says no when Jack asks if he's bribing him is strange.
*Pulitzer tells Jack to shup and listen to him three times and each time he gets progressivly angerier and louder, however, Jack isn't speaking so why should he shup up and listen?
*The color and lighting get real strange when Jack says, "I must have you scared pretty bad, old man."
*When Pulitzer says "...to your friends I won't be so kind!" he's not actually looking Jack in the face.
*Why does Jack smile after Pulitzer says that?
*Come to think of it, Jack isn't looking at Pulitzer during the conversation either.
*The Santa Fe Reprise in jail is so sad!
*I love it when Jack sings, "You're the only light that's guidin' me today..."
*Davey says, "I'm not like you!" after Weasel asked him if he wants a suit of his own. But he manages to say it without moving his lips! Now that is talent.
*Where exactly is Jack supposed to sleep in the basement? It kind of looks like he has a cot but it's hard to tell.
*Is Sarah really tall or are the Delancey's just short? She's several inches taller than both of them.
*Sarah smacks her hand into the wall after she hits Morris and it looks like she hurt herself.
*When Jack headbangs Oscar, there's this really cheesy thud and it comes just before their heads actually meet.
*The Delanceys call Weasel "Uncle Weas." What's up with that?
Denton's apartment, Once and For All and telling the World
*Why do they have that random shot of Les looking at this weird contraption (kinda looks like a spinning wheel) in Denton's apartment?
*That light that Jack flips on in the basement looks awfully modern.
*Poor Dave is really off key in Once and For All.
*That is soooooooo not Sarah's real singing voice.
*Don't ya love it when Jack sings, "Tell 'em I'm on my way?"
*The paper they print 'The Newsies Banner' on looks like that shiny fax paper.
*Why and how does Jack managed to magically change clothes in Once and For All?
*It looks like it hurts to hit that coffee table as hard as Teddy Roosevelt did.
*I'm sorry but Les can not sing.
*Who are the random newsies standing on the statue when all the child laborers come out? They look like Jack, Dave, Sarah, and Spot, etc, but if you look closer, it's not because they're running around in the street.
*Pulitzer trips when he's walking onto the balcony.
*Why does Pulitzer bother yelling, "Go home?" They can't hear him down in the streets and even if they could hear him, why would they listen?
*Pulitzer looks hilarious when he plugs his ears.
*When Weasel comes out, one of the newsies picks Boots up and kind of bounces him around. Boots sort of flails his arms around and it's pretty funny.
*When Denton tells Jack that it's over, why does Jack grab his arm and then put his hands up funny?
*Snyder looks seriously deranged when they take him away in the paddywagon. He has this creepy, crazed look in his eyes...
*Wanna have some fun? When Crutchy is talking to Jack after he gets out of the paddywagon, pause and unpause the movie. Crutchy is always making these dramatic faces where his eyes get as big as saucers and his mouth is an 'O'. It's hilarious.
*Jacks says something when he returns to the newsies in the carriage. It sounds sort of like, "I know I was important to you guys!"
*Watch for Jack sniffing before he kisses Sarah. Maybe he had a cold.
*Now tell me, when Jack and Sarah are kissing, is is just me or Jack doing all the work. Geez, I'll bet he's got his tongue down her throat...dude, Sarah sucks.
*At the end of the 'Big Kiss', when they 'come up for air', Les jumps on Jack and Sarah. But watch! Jack was going in for more but Les got in the way.
*Jack looks a little too happy after he's done kissing Sarah. Oh, the pain...
*Spot leaves in the carrigage with Teddy Roosevelt. Don't ask why...
*
Ya know, they wasted a lot of paper making 'Newsies'.
